IN QUEST OF THE GOLDEN RECTANGLE A WebQuest for Basic Geometry Designed by Mrs. Marylee Eargle Put some interesting graphic representing the content here Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits | What is the Golden Rectangle? Could it be the color? You are “Indiana Geometer” on a search for the Golden Rectangle. As the investigator you will search ancient places and sources for all pertinent information. Good luck on your adventure! You will be going in search
of the history of the Golden Rectangle as defined by the “ancients”. After you gather and evaluate the
information, you will be the CREATOR . You
will create a Golden
Rectangle! Working individually, you
will discover the Golden Rectangle. You
will be using several Internet resources to investigate the history and
ultimately to describe the procedure used to construct a Golden Rectangle.
Your final activity will be to construct, using a straight edge and compass,
a Golden Rectangle. Your quest has begun.. .. You will need to put your research notes into complete sentences and get as much information on the topic as possible. In your search you will need to explore and evaluate the following questions. You will have 2 days to complete these tasks.
2. Discuss some ways in which the Golden Rectangle appears in nature. Click on the link below to answer these questions. ( Value: 10 points) 3. Exploring the following source and discover how the Golden Rectangle appears in a shape that you might find on the beach. Explain. http://www.cpm.informatics.bangor.ac.uk/rpamaths/rpampages/snail.html (Value 10 points) 4.. You are now in search of other areas (architecture, art) in which the Golden Rectangle is seen. Discuss 3 artists whose use of the Golden Rectangle is mentioned. Choose one of these artists that especially like. http://www.mcs.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/R.Knott/Fibonacci/fibInArt.html (Value 10 points) 5. Arriving in ancient Greece, you are now on the Acropolis. There is an important building here. Your mission is to get the name of the building, the architects, and the name of the city where it is located. http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/The_Parthenon.html (Value 10 points) 6. Now you are ready to be the geometer. Your mission is to construct a Golden Rectangle. You will need to use a compass and a straight edge. This construction is to be done on a separate piece of paper and handed in separately. http://jwilson.coe.uga.edu/EMT669/Student.Folders/May.Leanne/Leanne's%20Page/Golden.Ratio/Golden.Ratio.html (Value 20 points) Congratulations! You have successfully completed your quest! If you would like to explore this topic further here are some additional links: 1. http://plato.evansville.edu/public/burnet/ch2a.htm 2. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/Geometry.html The total point value of the quest is 80 points. The specific point value for each question
is listed after each question. These
are the maximum points for each question. .At the conclusion each adventurer will have an understanding of the Golden Rectangle and identify a Golden Rectangle. Additionally, each student will recognize the presence of the Golden Rectangle in the Parthenon and in spirals. Credits & References l.
