Brief Life History
I was born in Stockholm to an American Foreign Service officer and his Swedish wife. My father, a Swedish American from Chicago, went to work for the State Department during WW II. My mother was a ballerina and dance instructor.
Due to the nature of my father's work, my brothers and I did a lot of traveling as children. I started traveling as a boy, and it remains a lifelong passion. I left home to go away to school at age 15, and highly recommend it for independent-minded teenagers.
I have lived in eight countries and visited over 40 others. I have been around the world twice, and speak six languages. Swedish was my first. As a nine-year-old boy, I was trilingual in English, Swedish, and German. I learned French in school and picked up Japanese and Spanish as an adult.
I have been a sea scout in Hong Kong, a naval officer in Vietnam, a carpenter in Hawaii, a graduate student in Tokyo, Japan, a high school teacher at Marist Brothers International School in Kobe, Japan, a contractor in Annapolis, and a university administrator in Guatemala.
Places I have lived:
Stockholm, Sweden Birmingham, England Munich, Germany
Wiesbaden, Germany Hong Kong, China Tokyo, Japan
Yokohama, Japan Kobe, Japan Copenhagen, Denmark
Wailua, Hawaii Washington, D.C. Antigua, Guatemala
Annapolis, MD Salisbury, MD
I have spent my working life almost evenly divided between education and building houses.
